How do you make a sandwich?

My family is gone for the majority of the weekend....time for me! I have a large island in my kitchen that is the perfect height/size to make a quilt sandwich.  I like to do my own quilting, I have many friends that piece the top and send to have it long arm quilted.  That also finishes into beautiful detailing that I am unable to do here in my humble abode.

A few months ago I learned a great trick to make this entire process easier and helps with minimizing the bumps and wrinkles on one side or the other.

Have you ever used two eight foot 2x4's and painters tape to make your sandwich?  A long table or space to spread out the length of the 2x4 is needed but no need to spread out and crawl on the floor to baste this baby.

Backing fabric is wrong side up, use painters tape to attach to 2x4

Top is right side up, begin taping to second 2x4

lay out each 2x4 and unroll slowly, adding batting, begin to smooth out wrinkles as layers are basted and you finalize your quilt sandwich

Sandwich is finished and ready to move to machine or prep for hand quilting.

Now for a break to shovel the drive way while the sun is shining.

Have a great weekend!

Off they go

This weekend my DH and kids will be leaving to spend time with our church youth group at "Winter Weekend".  A fun weekend for them, goofing off, messing around in the snow and fellowship.  A quiet weekend for me, a few household projects and general catching up.  I might even start to tackle the gathering of the tax stuff.  It's really cold here (currently 15 degrees) and we are to receive a fast moving storm over the next few hours that may give us some snow.

I have prepped sticky buns for the crew to have for breakfast and a batch of cookies.  I usually make the cookies with PB, but I did not include that in the recipe this time.  They have a little different look than I am used to but they still taste great.

Waiting for dough to rise to make sticky buns

 looking good.....

Hope everyone has a great weekend, stay warm.

Hexies and me :)

I started a hexi quilt using english paper piecing more than two years ago.  I knew when I began it would be a long term project as I plan to do this completly by hand.  I work on this when I have found snipits of time.  Last evening I found a short time while waiting and watching my son practice with the praise band at our church.  What a great group of people they are, Guz is an amazing musician and they have all (myself included) learned a great deal from him.

Work in progress

Here is another project that I began at least a year ago.  I guess it could be finished but it's aprox 48x48 the way it is now.  What do you do with a quilt that size?  So aside it went to the pile of unfinished/undetermined items.  In my attempt to make 2013 the year to address the UFO's this project has worked it's way to the top of the heap.  I am making it at least large enough to cover up with while sitting on the couch or chair watching Downton Abbey or the latest episode of Survivor.

Quickie

Have you ever had your DH come home from work and say "did I tell you ......is having a baby?"  Being a quilter, don't you feel you want to make something for the new arrival and mom to snuggle into?  Well, sometimes I have more prep time than others for a new project.  My kids keep me very busy and sometimes life just happens. I have made a few of these baby quilts using 2.5 inch strips.  I have also tried to put minky on the back...I won't make that mistake again.

Hope you all have a great weekend.  It's a three day for me, hope to have some quality time with my machine.  Stay warm.  There's a cold snap moving into our area over the next few days.  Good reason to stay inside.

Organized Scrappy

RQC13 hosted by soscrappy   find it at   http://superscrappy.blogspot.com/p/rsc12.html

She's hosting a Rainbow Scrappy for 2013.  January's color is Hot Pink!  I'm looking forward to this one.

Started RQC13 this week, actually a little of February's color in there too.  I confess that I have purchased fabric for this project.  Because I have a person/destination in mind for this quilt I want to plan this carefully.  Not everyone is as OK with the total scrappy like I am.

I love the bright colors on a dreary day.

Do you have any special projects planned for 2013?

Better late than never

I'm not one for resolutions, if I'm going to make a personal resolution it usually happens at the time of my birthday.  As I get older these mean more and I try to adhere and account much better.  The goal of the moment revolves around my quilting and acquisition of such fabric and toys to maintain my addiction.

Here is a Bonnie Hunter Quilt, Jared Takes a Wife.  Top is peiced but it has 't been quilted yet.  This was begun in July 2012, currently a partial UFO

For 2013 my fabric acquisition goal is to limit purchases for new projects.  I must finish two UFOs for every new project started.  I also see on other blogs where people are tracking the time spent making their quilts.  I plan to do that as well.  I think I will be amazed at the time spent on these various projects.
